Learn the simple, meditative art of sashiko stitching in this hands-on workshop led by exhibiting artist Elena Øhlander.
Sashiko is a traditional Japanese embroidery technique built from a simple running stitch. Historically used to mend and reinforce textiles, it transforms humble materials into beautiful, rhythmic patterns through repetition and care.
In this workshop, you’ll learn the basic techniques of sashiko while creating a set of two hand-dyed linen coasters — perfect for your morning coffee, afternoon tea, or evening drink.
Each participant will receive a complete stitching kit include:
Two 5” x 5” squares of hand-dyed 100% linen*
100% cotton sashiko thread
Gold-tipped sashiko needle
Traditional stitch pattern template
Wax-free transfer paper
Step-by-step instructions to continue stitching at home
Limited to 8 participants for an intimate workshop experience
No sewing experience necessary — beginners welcome
Participants leave with a finished set of hand-stitched linen coasters and the tools to continue stitching at home
All kits are supplied by WE GATHER, Brooklyn, New York.
Sashiko is a stitching and mending method that likely originated in Japan during the 17th and 18th centuries. It has been developed and practiced by Japanese craftspeople for hundreds of years, and practitioners of this art generously and graciously share it with a global audience.
